In 1983, shortly after St. Judes designation changed from mission to parish, we became active in the Allen Ministerial Alliance. Still in its infancy, the participating churches took turns sponsoring a luncheon on the 2nd Tuesday of each month for area Senior Citizens in the basement of the old Allen Middle School. The facility was badly in need of repair but the fellowship and food made up for the inconveniences. As it became apparent that the middle school would no longer be available, our founding pastor, Fr. Tom Cloherty offered the use of the St. Jude Parish Hall and kitchen for the Senior Luncheon beginning in 1987.
While we enjoy the privilege of hosting the luncheon at our facilities, we also take turns with area churches providing the meal. St. Jude serves lunch twice a year, partnering with the Presbyterian Church. St. Jude provides and the desserts; the Presbyterian Church supplies the main dish. This is no small gathering either. As the City of Allen has grown since 1983, today we prepare for at least 175 Seniors monthly. If you would like to help prepare the meal, the dates of our participation are announced in the parish bulletin. We also encourage you to invite those who may not have heard about the 2nd Tuesday Seniors Luncheon to come join in the fun.
The meal and fellowship are not the only items on the menu. The sponsoring faith groups have expanded the reach of the Ministerial Alliance to draw the community into participating. Often, the grade schools bring different classes to help serve lunch, while the high school provides entertainment.
The senior citizens of the City of Allen are a treasured presence. St. Jude, along with so many others in the community, are the heart, hands and love of Christ in the lives of our Senior Citizens. God has blessed us with their gentle presence. Perhaps the best part of this whole experience is the opportunity to serve our growing population of senior citizens as the whole body of Christ in one! Its apparent that the sponsoring faith group and students benefits as much as the participants.
