"Train a child in the way they should go; and even when they are old, they will not swerve from it." Proverbs 22:6

"The role of parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute." The right and the duty of parents to educate their children are primordial and inalienable. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2221 / 2226)

Parents are the primary faith teachers for their children. The Catholic faith simply cannot be taught in a weekly one-hour class, and that is not the task of the parish religious education program. As a faith community, the parish is there to support and expand that primary teaching that takes place in the home.

St. Jude hosts two parent meetings for each Year of Confirmation, one in September and one in January. Parents will receive a Confirmation Folder containing pertinent forms and information pertaining to your student's level of preparation at the September meeting.

Parent Pages
In addition to the parent meetings, Parent Pages (condensed versions of the weekly lesson plans) will be available to parents. An e-mail reminder of when each week's Parent Pages are available will be sent to those parents listed in our e-mail distribution (see "Get Connected"). Parents can download these Parent Pages each week and stay up-to-date with what their students are learning. This allows parents to be "in-the-know" and ask specific questions of your student and what they are learning. We believe that helping the parents to be involved in the religious education of their student is an important aspect of our program.

Regular Mass Attendance

"The first precept ('You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.') requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2042)

As the first precept of the Church, regular Mass attendance is a requirement for all, especially those preparing for Confirmation. Parents, as the primary teachers of the faith for their children, set the tone and example of how to live out our Catholic faith.

"Holy Communion augments our union with Christ." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1391)

"The more we share the life of Christ and progress in his friendship, the more difficult it is to break away from him by mortal sin." (CCC, 1395)

"Those who receive the Eucharist are united more closely to Christ." (CCC, 1396)

"This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me." (Luke 22:19)

Attending Mass is the most important aspect of being Catholic, and especially so for those preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
