Jesus is Stripped of His Garments
Kneel
Presider:
We adore you, O Christ, and we praise
you.
All:
Because by your holy cross you have
redeemed the world.
Arise
Presider:
Arrived at last at the place of sacrifice,
they prepare to crucify him. His garments are torn from
his bleeding Body, and he, the Holy of holies, stands
exposed to the vulgar gaze of the rude and scoffing
multitude.
| |
O Lord Jesus, you did endure this
shame for our most shameful deeds. Strip us, we beseech
you, of all false shame, conceit and pride, and make
us humble ourselves voluntarily in this life, that we
may escape everlasting shame in the world to come.
Reader:
When the crowd brought Jesus to the
site of Golgotha, (or "Skull Place") they
tried to give him wine drugged with myrrh, but he would
not take it. Then they crucified him and divided up
his garments by rolling dice for them to see what each
should take.
All:
Naked I came forth from my mother's
womb, and naked shall I go back again. The Lord gave
and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of
the Lord!
All sing:
Make me feel as you have felt;
Make my soul to glow and melt,
With the love of Christ, my Lord.
